Fabien Cappello
Drawn Candlesticks, 2012
Lost-wax method cast brass
Max. height 30 cms
The 5-piece set of candlesticks, made from lost wax method brass casting, saw Fabien Cappello create abstract outlines inspired by chess pieces before strategically forging them together in a series of totemic forms from brass. For Paris-born, London-based Fabien Cappello "design is not always about solving problems, but creating new possibilities and looking at things in fresh ways".
Like Tatlin's infamous Monument to the Third International (1919-20) and Constructivist counter-reliefs, Cappello's designs are three dimensional drawings poised somewhere between sculpture and architecture. Commissioned for Gallery Libby Sellers' chess themed Salon 'Games', Cappello's idea of objects in constant evolution was entirely appropriate, as just as chess pieces are shifted across the board - so too are the candlesticks in seemingly perpetual motion. The lines and the planes of the sticks also draw parallels between the physical motion of the chess pieces.
