Mould in Motion, 2012
Hand-blown glass (from a wooden mould)
Series of 12, 2 Prototypes
As Philipp Grundhöfer says, "glassblowing is a process which is continually in motion. After the liquid glass has left the oven, the glassblower has to turn and move the hot material non-stop. By contrast, ordinary wooden moulds are quite static tools. I thus wanted to create a wooden mould which allows the glassblower to exert an active influence on the moulding process. The new mould consists of different heights and different shaped openings on the inside. Each module can be turned in different directions around a pivot while the glassblower blows the still soft glass into the mould. This gives the glassblower direct control over the final shape and allows him to create unique glass pieces. The result reflects this dynamic impact on the moulding process and gives the viewer an impression of how the piece was produced".
