For Spark Design Space's 'Austerland: Designs from Nowhere' exhibition Julia Lohmann and Gero Grundmann have created new works made from Icelandic seaweed and Reindeer's antlers and driftwood. Seeking to explore the possibitilties for small-scale producction in East Iceland using locally sourced materials and skills, the designers were invited to participate in a series of workshops with local practitioners in Egilsstaðir, Djúpivogur, Eskifjörður, Vopnafjörður and Norðfjörður over the Autumn of 2013. The exhibited designs reveal an intriguing mix of narratives, interspersing old and new materials and techniques, celebrating the collaborative nature of the project and demonstrating the range of resources, skills and materials that can be found in the area.
