Jo Nagasaka's Tokyo-based architectural practice Schemata has been selected to contribute to Wallpaper*'s Handmade exhibition. Having been paired up with the Scottish rubberized fabrics specialist Hancock, Nagasaka chose to design a series of outdoor slingback chairs. By respositioning the convential raincoat material in the world of contemporary furniture design, Nagasaka brought a fresh vision to the traditional company.
Nagasaka was intrigued by the fabric's strength and thinness and, inspired by its 'flatness', he devised a chair made of a single layer of Hancock's fabric. Held by a frame, the tensile structure swings gently when one sits in it, giving a feeling of lying in a hanmock.
