The London-based cashmere brand Oyuna has commissioned Peter Marigold and Hunting & Narud to design a series of textiles. Briefed with challenging pre-conceived notions about cashmere, the final results are presented at the exhibition Soft // Edge during the London Design Festival.
Peter Marigold conceived 'Iron', a reflection on the roots of the material, originally worn by Mongolian nomads as protection from the elements. Raw steel was used to make marks on folded fabric, which he then immersed in water to initiate a rusting process, in an attempt to "capture time." 'Time Piece' by Hunting & Narud reflects on the lengthy cashmere production process by translating the number of hairs a Mongolian cashmere goat produces each year, month and day into a chequered pattern in which ‘time’ elements have been inserted as existing geometric symbols.
