For London Design Festival 2013, Simon Hasan has collaborated with renowned British furniture and bespoke interiors brand LINLEY to develop a new furniture collection, titled 'Graft'. With the new collection, Simon has sought to overturn convention - by celebrating the natural imperfections in timber, which are usually erased from the material during the craftsmanship process, Simon has instead elevated such faults through complex marquetry techniques in materials like walnut, brass and steel. As he says of the collection, "I wanted to stay very close to what LINLEY is famous for, exquisite marquetry and fine cabinetmaking, but use these skills to celebrate the characteristics in timber that we normally disregard. Ironically, the designs are much more intricate than conventional marquetry motifs and only a company such as LINLEY has the expertise to realise them".
The collection comprises a Console Table, Side Table and Coffee Table and can be viewed at the LINLEY flagship store on Pimlico Road throughout the Festival. 'Graft' will be available in LINLEY stores from October. The project is the latest instalment in the LINLEY Collaborations Initiative, which aims "to engage modern British designers and artists in order to push the boundaries of traditional cabinetmaking".
