Trish Lorenz features Dutch designer Aldo Bakker in her article showcasing contemporary uses of lacquer. Noting the skill and patience required for applying this technique, Lorenz reports "there is no way to erase mistakes." When discussing the time-honoured but time-laboured method, Bakker says he "fell in love with urushi" (a Japanese lacquer) at first sight. By applying the process to oversized objects and using bright colours, Bakker brings a new aesthetic to the ancient art form.
